Using a Commonplace Book for Self-Care
A commonplace journal, or “commonplacing,” is a type of personal notebook or journal used to collect and organize knowledge, ideas, quotations, and reflections. Commonplace books have a long, interesting history dating back to antiquity and were especially popular during the Renaissance and early modern periods. Many important and famous people have used them.
People use commonplace journals to save information that they find to be valuable, interesting or that inspires and motivates them. It might be quotes from books, songs, speeches, or lectures. It could also be personal and reflective including things like goals and projects.
You can organize your commonplace book in any way that makes sense to your brain but historically, they have often been organized by theme or subject. They can be a tool to help you learn, explore, and preserve knowledge.
Now, there are many forms that a commonplace journal can take. If you’re like me, you like to write stuff down as the act of writing helps you to remember. But if you’re not a writer, you can use an app on your phone or computer. The result is the same: to keep the information that is important and valuable to you in a form that is accessible.
